So, basically we can distinguish between baskets and thermal bags, the typical ones to take to the beach or to the park; isothermal cooler backpacks, more for excursions and routes; isothermal rigid coolers; electric rigid coolers with cooling; and thermoelectric rigid coolers with compressor.
The overall dimensions of a cooler will depend on its interior capacity in volume, and also on the material or possible extras included. Thicker walls, an extra reinforced lid or a motor will make the model bulkier, and also heavier.
The total weight is important depending on whether we need to transport the cooler by hand or over long distances. Again, we have to consider that they will weigh much more once full. If we want to move it easily on a stable surface, models with wheels are a good bet.
Balls and backpacks should offer reinforced textile materials on the outside, of good quality, resistant to moisture or waterproof, sun and extreme temperatures. The interior should be reinforced with insulating and thermal material.
The portable cooler is a very useful element for those who regularly or sporadically carry out activities such as walks, excursions or picnics outdoors. It consists of a box or bag made of materials that thermally insulate its contents. The basic ones only maintain the temperature of what is inside, while the electric ones also incorporate a mechanism that generates cold.
The disadvantage of this type of portable cooler is that, as the hours go by, the accumulators lose cold. Generally, they are cheap, light and easy to transport. They can be of two types:
Their format is similar to that of rigid thermal coolers. They can be made of plastic or metal. The difference is that they are capable of producing cold. They incorporate a mechanism, generally installed in the lid, consisting of a fan that collects air from the outside and an aluminum dissipator in charge of cooling it and propelling it inside the cooler.
They can be plugged either to alternating current (to the wall) at 230 V or to direct current (car cigarette lighter), 12 V/24 V. Generally, they cool between 18 ºC and 25 ºC below the outside temperature.

Affordable rigid coolers are effective at maintaining food temperatures for hours at a time, and because they have no power source, they do not rely on electricity or batteries to operate. However, their ability to maintain food temperatures is limited.
Thermoelectric type are, in the opinion of professionals, the best portable coolers. Aesthetically similar to the rigid ones, these coolers allow to maintain the interior temperature indefinitely. Their thermoelectric cooling technology is capable of lowering the ambient temperature by up to 30 degrees Celsius.
Plastic coolers, on the other hand, are highly resistant; they are difficult to damage due to knocks, scratches, etc. Their lightness is in between that of metal and fabric coolers, as is their price. They require minimal maintenance and, of course, their insulating capacity never disappoints.
Increasingly popular are coolers made of fabric, also called “flexible coolers”. They stand out for their lightness, mobility and ergonomics, without sacrificing strength, insulation and other qualities that they share with plastic and metal models. Their great disadvantage, however, is their capacity, which is generally lower than that of other materials.
Are plastic coolers good? 2022
Looking at our garbage, we realize how much single-use plastic we throw away every day, the vast majority of which comes from food packaging. This plastic is not only harmful to the environment, but also to our precious health, because even if we don’t want to, we all eat plastic and that has consequences. To eliminate or drastically reduce plastic and lead a Zero Waste life it is necessary to go by parts. In this post we will focus on how to achieve a plastic-free fridge, that is, that the food we keep in it is not wrapped, protected or preserved in plastic.
The refrigerator is one of the main entrances of single-use plastic in the house, especially if we do the shopping in supermarkets. In these establishments we have become accustomed to seeing such unnecessary scenes as a cut and plasticized pumpkin, zucchini spaghetti in bags, a cucumber covered in plastic, salad bags, two apples on a tray and a long etcetera.
