Where do the used clothes from the ‘solidarity’ containers go?

For UN Environment “One of the great challenges for Latin American authorities is the lack of a strong recycling industry”. A recent report by the agency states that a third of all waste generated in the region’s cities ends up in open dumps or in the environment; and another study reveals that around 145,000 tons of waste is disposed of improperly every day and only 10% is reused through recycling or other recovery techniques.

Colombia followed the trend, and on April 28, 2016 passed resolution 0668 that “governs the rational use of plastic bags” whereby the government banned those that possess less than 30×30 cm and are single-use. In addition, in July 2017 the government applied a tax on them to discourage their consumption and the objective is for the same to increase at a rate of 50% per year.

In the case of Panama, as of January 19, 2018, supermarkets, pharmacies and retailers have 18 months to stop using plastic bags, and warehouses and wholesalers have a period of 24 months to do so. The law prohibits the use of polyethylene bags in supermarkets, self-service stores, warehouses or stores in general to transport products or goods.

I visited my local branches of Tesco, Morrisons, Waitrose and Lidl in North London to see what was happening on the ground and to find out if a weekly ‘green’ store was within my reach.

For those wishing to package their products, Tesco has switched to recyclable bags made from a plastic/paper mix. This month, my nearest Tesco hypermarket joined Sainsbury’s in offering reusable mesh bags for 30p each. However, plastic-wrapped cucumbers and single-use potatoes were still lining the aisles.

It is still not possible to buy loose leafy greens such as kale and spinach, or certain herbs, in the big supermarkets, although you can buy coriander and basil in pots. At my Lidl, the potted herbs were in a plastic pot with a plastic sleeve.

At Lidl, it was easy to pick up fruits and vegetables in bulk, and customers could even put nuts in their own containers or use their reusable string bags (two for 49p). But elsewhere in the store there was still an alarming amount of plastic items.

Naturally fresh produce, and primarily the fruit and vegetable section, is a major focus for plastic and we have seen chains now allowing customers to take plastic containers into the store to be put in by the butcher or fishmonger, rather than wrapping it themselves, and multiple announcements to increase bulk in the fresh produce sections. Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco all have more or less advanced pilots, and have returned the scales to the sections for customers to weigh their fruit, or we have more products being sold on a unit price basis.

Waitrose has been the pioneer with the adaptation of one of its stores to a concept that is good for customers who want to use less plastic (more bulk in all sections, even in the alcoholic beverages and cleaning products, rental of containers to carry the products purchased, more selective collection points for packaging, etc.) and Morrisons is also experimenting with how to have a fresh section with less plastic, and above all, in the products it prepares in the bakeries of the stores.
