Does Australia recycle?

In response to a survey conducted in Australia, nearly 8 in 10 adults (78%) believe that the use of compostable packaging is a more effective solution to the plastic waste crisis than plastic recycling.

Nearly 9 in 10 (89%) are concerned about plastic waste generated by packaging and a further 79% believe that the government should prioritize encouraging the use of compostable packaging over encouraging plastic recycling.

However, recycling plastics is not a silver bullet. Plastics that are difficult to recycle, such as films, which are used to package consumer goods including bread, fresh produce and clothing deliveries, are often considered uneconomical to recycle and any plastics contaminated with food are removed from the recycling waste stream.

Compostable materials can be used to replace plastic films and thereby reduce their environmental impact. The material must be certified to decompose within a specified period of time.

Goodbye to plastic bags in Australia

For every 1,000 square meters, or about four tennis courts, Australians throw away about 49 pieces of litter. The biggest culprits are beverage containers.  In Australia they believe that one way to reduce this is to reimburse people when beverage containers are deposited for recycling through container deposit recycling (CDR) systems.

The slogan is that beverage containers over 150ml will be eligible for a 10c rebate through a statewide deposit and also invest in vending machines. This has reignited a debate, largely driven by the beverage industry.

The 47 CDR schemes recovered an average of 76% of beverage containers. In the United States, the recovery rates for aluminum, plastic and glass beverage containers in the 11 RDC states are 84%, 48% and 65% respectively, compared to 39%, 20% and 25% in the nonRDC states.

The figures are similar in South Australia, one of the longest running CDR schemes in the world: 84%, 74% and 85% for cans, plastic and glass compared with the national average of 63%, 36% and 36%.Some CDR schemes donate the refund to charity, but people are more likely to return to a garbage can for a refund. And the larger the restitution, the higher the return rates.

“We are committed to protecting our nation’s environment and building our capacity to turn recyclable material into products that people want and need,” said Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, announcing the investment of 20 million Australian dollars (13.5 million U.S. dollars or 12 million euros).

The investment in waste recycling innovation projects, which will also create local jobs, is part of Canberra’s commitment to Australia’s states and territories to develop a timetable for a ban on the export of waste plastic, paper, glass and tires.

Is it possible to earn some money in Australia by recycling?

The first thing to know is that Australians understand recycling as an individual responsibility of each citizen. Each house or community manages its own waste, so it is very easy for the council to know who is managing their waste correctly and who is not.

As in most developed countries, in Australia the council is responsible for waste collection. Collectors come by weekly or as often as every 15 days depending on the type of waste.

To find out exactly what day of the week you should put your recycling garbage cans out on the street, ask your neighbors or flatmates; it varies from neighborhood to neighborhood. If by any chance your house does not have garbage cans, ask the City Council, who will kindly give them to you free of charge.

If you want to recycle other waste such as batteries, you will have to find out more because it will depend on the state you are in. ALDI supermarkets usually have specific containers for batteries. There is also this website to find out which stores have these containers.
