As the coronavirus pandemic pushes people to get more takeout and delivery, it’s also having another effect: at least temporarily halting progress on a proposal to reduce single-use plastics and ban Styrofoam from Chicago restaurants altogether.
To get a sense of the impact of that and the amount of plastic waste created by even a single meal, the Chicago Sun-Times and ABC7 ordered a bunch of takeout and delivery and had a socially distanced outdoor picnic.
Ald. Scott Waguespack (32nd) had championed Chicago’s proposed ordinance last January. It would ban Styrofoam containers, require reusable plates for dining and mandate recyclable or compostable containers for takeout orders.
But that push has been postponed because restrictions imposed because of the pandemic meant that “our restaurants were really under siege,” Waguespack says, with many closing and most struggling financially.
