What does BPA free mean?

The study began by accident. Geneticist Patricia Hunt of Washington State University and her team were investigating the reproductive effects of bisphenol A in mice. They gave the study group, which they placed inside BPA-free cages, doses of BPA via an eyedropper, something they did not do with the control group.

“We need to catch up as disease detectives,” says Leonardo Trasande, director of the division of environmental pediatrics at NYU Langone Health, who was not involved in the research. However, this detective work is a basket case, something he likens to “the chemical Guacamole game.”

Bisphenol A or BPA is a common compound present in resins and some types of plastic. It is a chemical known as an endocrine disruptor. In the body, these chemicals can act like hormones or disrupt normal hormonal functions.

“The worrying thing about this is that hormones regulate almost everything in our bodies,” says Johanna Rochester, chief scientist at the nonprofit The Endocrine Disruption Exchange, which was not involved in the study. In the case of BPA, there are concerns about its estrogen-mimicking effects.

BPA and BPS-free bottles

Government regulatory agencies have declared BPA safe for use in a variety of applications, including food contact applications. These conclusions are based on numerous scientific studies and are supported by other scientific organizations.

The German Society of Toxicology, after evaluating the scientific data, reached conclusions similar to those of many government agencies that had reviewed the scientific data on BPA, namely “the available evidence indicates that exposure to BPA poses an inappreciable health risk to the human population, including newborns and infants.”

BPA (Bisphenol A) is a chemical used in the manufacture of a type of plastic called polycarbonate. BPA is also used in the inner lining of almost all food and beverage cans, including baby formula cans.

Why is BPA used in food and beverage containers? Because BPA is strong, lightweight and durable, coatings made with BPA prevent food and beverage cans from rusting, allowing them to last longer.

BPA-free bottles are those bottles that, as their name indicates, do not contain the substance BPA or Bisphenol A. A BPA-free bottle avoids the transmission of this substance to your body, gaining in long-term health. But they also offer you other benefits that a plastic bottle cannot give you:

BPA-free bottles, due to their materials, are resistant to extreme temperatures, so you can fill them with hot liquids and put them in the microwave. In the case of normal plastic bottles and containers, it is not advisable to heat them or fill them with hot liquids or food, as it facilitates the transmission of BPA to the food.

This substance is basically found in all hard plastics used to manufacture all types of plastic products and is also used to coat the inside of cans to prevent corrosion. Being present in food containers, BPA easily leaches from the plastic into the food or beverage.

There is a belief that plastic tupperware is bad for your health. And this does not have to be so. Not all plastic tupperware is harmful or dangerous. When buying a tupperware we have to look at the pictograms that incorporates, or make sure that it is a tupperware without BPA, substance that we will now talk about in this post. In them we will know if the tupper can be used for food use and if it can be put in the microwave, dishwasher or freezer. Not all plastic containers are suitable for storing food.

Tupperware intended for food use undergoes strict controls that guarantee its use for this purpose. These controls are used to check whether, for example, the plastic deteriorates or releases microparticles when it comes into contact with an acidic food such as tomatoes. Thanks to these tests, we can be reassured when, for example, we put a tupper in the microwave. If the microwave drawing appears on the tupper, it means that heating it does not pose a health risk. Conclusion: always pay attention to the pictograms to be calm with plastic tupperware.
