What kind of waste is human tissue?

Microbiological waste

Population growth, overconsumption and a production culture that favors the disposable over the returnable, have transformed garbage into one of the main environmental and pollution problems. A change of perspective from the concept of garbage to that of classifiable and reusable waste can help us to minimize the problem.

In general terms, we speak of garbage or waste to identify those leftover materials that apparently cannot be used again. The term waste, on the other hand, is used to identify those materials that can have value in themselves when reused or recycled.

Types of health care waste

Healthcare waste is classified into the groups listed in Decree 21/2015, of March 3, on healthcare waste management in the Autonomous Community of Euskadi, as follows:

They are the waste consisting of single-use materials, clothes, gloves and masks, treatment material stained with blood, secretions or excretions, containers that contain or have contained urine, empty drainage containers, empty bags of blood or other biological liquids, dialysis filters, plasters, and in general any other stained waste or that has absorbed biological liquids, provided that it is not waste included in groups II and III.

These are wastes that either because of their risk of causing infection, or because they present a perceived or psycho-emotional risk, require differentiated management at all stages of management.

Biological waste classification

Using a combination of computer programming, μ-Raman spectrometry and mass spectrometry, the team was able to identify and extract plastics from tissue samples, and produce particle count data, along with the mass and surface area of the fragments.

Using this technique, the team detected dozens of different types of plastics, including polyethylene, polycarbonate and, interestingly, Bisphenol A (BPA), an industrial chemical used in some plastics that is the subject of some controversy, due to potential health risks. In total, the team found plastic contamination, including BPA, in all the samples it studied.
