Are McDonalds plastic straws recyclable?

Don’t Throw This Away – Crafts with Disposable Cups

Flore Berlingen, director of Zero Waste France, explains: “This is the first report on the environmental and waste policy of McDonald’s and it is very important because the concept of circular economy is something fundamental in the environmental policies of companies but this is not the case of McDonald’s. The major problem with McDonald’s France’s waste is that it has increased and that the company does not apply the principles of circular economy, we do not see a real waste reduction policy”.

Zero Waste shows how waste separation is currently not possible in its restaurants, contrary to what is practiced in other European countries, in Germany or Belgium, for example, McDonald’s restaurants have separate waste compartments for organic and non-organic waste. The recycling rate in those countries reaches the rate of 90 % while in France it is only 25 %.

The RFI news service asked McDonald’s communications manager for a statement on this report, but only obtained a written statement stipulating that “the company attaches great importance to the reduction of waste produced by its activities”.

The fast food giant says its goal is to ensure that all packaging comes from renewable or recycled sources by 2025. McDonald’s will remove plastic lids from its McFlurry ice cream desserts as part of a drive to be more environmentally friendly, it has revealed.

Are there any bags and boxes from McDonald’s hamburgers or other fast food recyclable places? If they are clean, they are recyclable. If you take the time to separate the clean cardboard and paper from the dirty ones, then the clean portions can be recycled. Like pizza boxes: the top is usually clean, but the bottom is usually stained with grease.

McDonald’s new straws are completely recyclable, their creators have said. It follows the fast food giant saying that the thickness of the straws made them difficult to process and they should be disposed of in the general trash. “The fact of the matter is our straw is recyclable, 100% recyclable.”

We at McDonald’s recognize our responsibility to protect and preserve the environment for future generations. Our goals are to minimize water and energy consumption, continually increase recycling rates and work in our local communities to have a positive effect on the environment.

Coffee cup sleeves, hence known as coffee sleeves, coffee clutches, coffee cozies, hot cup jackets, paper zarfs, coffee collars, coffee sleeve collars and coffee cup holders, are roughly cylindrical sleeves that fit snugly over the paperless paper coffee cups to insulate the drinker’s hands from the coffee heat.

The cup holders, are made of paper pulp and literally get recycled by putting them back into the forming machine for containers and makes a new one. So they are most likely recyclable in any recycling am.

The Transport 4 Cup Trays are made from recycled paper pulp and cardboard pulp. These make them sustainable because there is no need to use virgin material. The Trays are not printable or customizable.

“While the materials are recyclable, their current thickness makes it difficult for them to be processed by our waste solutions providers, who also help us recycle our paper cups,” a McDonald’s spokesperson told the UK’s Press Association news agency.

In a press release at the time, Paul Pomroy, CEO of McDonald’s in the UK and Ireland, said, “The government’s ambitious plans, combined with strong customer feedback, helped accelerate the move away from plastic, and I am proud to have helped bring about this social change.”
