Is the foil on yogurt lids recyclable?

AEDAS Homes has compiled some of the most frequently asked questions about waste separation and recycling so that you can easily contribute to the protection of the environment by following the advice of Ecoembes -a non-profit organization that promotes sustainability and environmental care through recycling-.

Pay attention to know where to recycle aluminum foil, strawberry boxes or cotton swabs so that you can deposit them in the correct waste container and thus contribute to avoid environmental pollution.

We must bear in mind that it is just as important to recycle our packaging as it is to separate it properly. For this reason, the household garbage separation system has established that blue containers are for paper and cardboard, green containers for glass and yellow containers for plastic and cans, among other items.

Aluminum foil is an everyday product. Thousands of people buy it every day to use it in different areas such as in the kitchen or for handicrafts. Whatever it is used for, it always generates some confusion when it comes to putting it in the correct container.

Primary aluminum can leave the factory in different shapes and alloys. And from there it goes back into other factories to make airplane fuselages, cars, newspaper printing plates, window frames, cosmetic products or simple soda cans.

Once the aluminum arrives at the recycling plant, the first step is to separate it from other metals and elements that could contaminate it by various methods. Once all impurities have been removed, the aluminum is pressed, packaged and sent to the smelter. It is then transferred to specific plants for its return to the manufacturing chain. There, the smelter or refiner converts it into ingots or billets, which will be used to create new products.

With only the 5% that is used to extract aluminum from bauxite, aluminum is extracted from all the scrap that is recycled. So look how important the recycling of this material is, it saves 95% of the energy needed for its manufacture. Perhaps a simple can may not seem much, but its value is much greater than its price.

Disposable aluminum trays are one of the must-haves for take-away food businesses. Thanks to their packaging characteristics, they allow food to be optimally preserved during the journey from the store to the customer’s home.

This makes the use of these aluminum containers very frequent in businesses and restaurants with delivery service. For this reason, users must know the correct ways to dispose of these containers, throw them away and recycle them efficiently.

Single-use aluminum trays are part of the semi-rigid aluminum packaging category. They are malleable enough to be formed into a ball, which the user must form into a ball before placing them in the trash bag or garbage can. They are then ready for recycling.

Aluminium roses. Aluminium roses.

The correct answer is yellow, as well as the transparent wrapping (film), the porexpan (white cork) and the yogurt lids. If we do not separate aluminum foil correctly, it will most likely end up in the landfill when the tobacco industry uses about 29,000 tons per year of this material.

We should not throw it away. It is necessary to think that both utensils contain a great quantity of metal -and in addition of quality- that is wasted if we throw it to the container. The ideal is to take it to a clean point so that it can be recycled with the scrap. The same applies to CDs and DVDs, varnishes, batteries, oils (whether for cooking or cars) and household appliances.

If the container contains the green dot symbol (curved arrow) it is thrown into the yellow container for recycling. If you do not find this icon on the label, take it to a clean point. Keep in mind that insecticides are dangerous and very toxic products. More than we think.
