Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE), sometimes referred to as thermoplastic rubbers, are a class of copolymers or a physical mixture of polymers (usually a plastic and a rubber) which behave with the same properties as thermoplastics and elastomers. While most elastomers are thermosetting, thermoplastics are, in contrast, relatively easy to mold by the usual processing methods, such as injection molding. Thermoplastic elastomers show the typical advantages of both materials. The main difference between thermosetting elastomers and thermoplastic elastomers is the type of crosslinking in their structures. In fact, crosslinking is a critical structural factor that contributes to imparting high elastic properties. Crosslinking in thermoset polymers is a covalent bond created during the vulcanization process. On the other hand, crosslinking in thermoplastic elastomeric polymers is a weak dipole bond or hydrogen bridge bond or takes place in one of the phases of the material.

DensityThe low density of the Bestomer series is a very important advantage over technical vulcanized rubbers such as EP(D)M rubber, neoprene and others. Thus, to obtain the same finished part, a much smaller quantity of Bestomer will be needed than would be required for these traditional technical rubbers.

This parameter is directly related to the 100% modulus and the elongation at break. All these values vary depending on the Bestomer hardness grade selected. In any case, high hardness grades have superior mechanical properties to lower hardness Bestomer grades.

Both the tear strength (which will allow its use in typical classic vulcanizing applications) and the hot tear strength (which will allow quick and easy demolding) have very high values as can be seen in the tables.

The values of these parameters achieved with TPVs are very good properties for thermoplastic materials. The results for deformation due to compressive stress, at room temperature and above all at higher temperatures and for long periods of time, are excellent, as well as the resistance to remaining deformation due to traction, which represents very good values. These values make it possible to use this thermoplastic material in applications where traditionally only conventional vulcanized rubbers were used.
