Hard Plastic Adhesive
Loctite Epoxy Mil is a two-component adhesive that repairs, fills, seals and welds a wide variety of materials, acting like a cold metal weld. It is highly resistant to water and high temperatures, as well as solvents, acids and greases, and the bond is so strong that once hardened, it can be filed, cut or drilled.
Loctite Epoxy – Mil is specified for bonding stainless steel, steel, copper, bronze, aluminum, ceramics, porcelain, glass, metal, stone, wood, polystyrene, rigid PVC, polycarbonate, ABS (acrylonitrile / butadiene / styrene terpolymer) and SAN (styrene / acrylonitrile copolymer) plastics and fiberglass reinforced plastics.

In terms of tensile strength, the strongest adhesives are epoxy adhesives, specifically one-component heat-curing epoxy adhesives. With a tensile strength of 35-41 N / mm² (5100- 6000 psi).
The tensile strength of the adhesive is simply how strong the adhesive is once cured. It says nothing about how well they bond to different substrates. In order of tensile strength, the highest values correspond to metal-to-metal bonding cases. The best performing adhesives are:
One-component epoxies bond well to metals and offer a good alternative to welding, providing high shear, impact and peel strength. It provides excellent resistance to chemicals and temperature extremes. Shear strength in steel can reach 41 N / mm² (6000 psi). Note that steel surface treatment and joint spacing may affect ultimate strength.
Cyanoacrylate adhesives, especially pure methyl adhesives such as Permabond 910 and impact modified adhesives such as Permabond 731, have exceptional strength on steel 30 N / mm² (4400 psi). They do not have the same chemical and thermal resistance. Epoxy adhesives and acrylic adhesives provide better impact resistance than cyanoacrylates. The advantage is that cyanoacrylate may be easier to remove. Only warm water and soap will be needed to separate the surfaces. In some cases, temperature (100-120°C) can also be used with materials that can withstand it.

There are other adhesives, such as those specific for wood or carpenter’s glue, that do not react as expected when applied to hard, high-density synthetic surfaces. This is the case for objects such as buckets, boxes and other containers. Hard plastics are made of polyethylene (indicated with a 2 or “HDPE”) or polypropylene (indicated with a 5 or “PP”) and if we have to work with them, it will be necessary to find an adhesive that guarantees the durability and effectiveness of the fixing.
