Similar schemes already operate in countries such as Denmark, Sweden and Germany.    This take-back scheme provides for consumers to pay an upfront deposit when purchasing a beverage, which is redeemed in exchange for the empty beverage container. Possible variants of a take-back scheme include cash rewards for shipping beverage containers without an initial deposit.

This is often done through a network of “reverse vending machines,” where the plastic or glass bottle or can is inserted and the machine returns cash. Once a bottle is returned, companies are responsible for ensuring that they are effectively recycled, a move that has resulted in a 97% recycling rate in Germany.

“We are in no doubt that plastic is wreaking havoc on our marine environment: killing dolphins, strangling turtles and degrading our most precious habitats. It is absolutely vital that we act now to address this threat and curb the millions of plastic bottles a day that are not being recycled.

What does the number in the recycling symbol mean?

In the field of recycling, European countries are at the forefront and were the first to implement incentive policies to encourage waste separation and recycling and measures to discourage the consumption of single-use products, such as plastic bags or straws. In this regard, the EU has set a target of recycling 50% of household waste by 2020 and 65% by 2030.

The Scandinavian country is one of the European territories with the greatest culture of environmental protection and therefore with one of the most successful recycling rates. The success of the Swedish waste management system is based on the awareness of its citizens to take the first step: separation. Swedes separate their waste into colored bags, depending on its classification as waste, and recycling plants separate it into recyclable and non-recyclable items. Non-recyclables are incinerated in plants that transform their combustion into energy (in a process known as Waste To Energy) to supply electricity to 250,000 homes in the country, while recyclables follow the usual process that turns them into new materials.

The thermoplastic resins industry is focused on producing packaging products for different companies, including the food industry, followed by mining, construction and agribusiness.

However, in Chile there is a matrix that categorizes the plastics industry in three parts, which is composed of 1) national and international suppliers of virgin resins or polymers, for the production of plastic products; 2) manufacturing companies and; 3) suppliers of recycled plastics, which supply those that manufacture them, for the production of other product lines, thanks to the restriction that exists to use only virgin raw material in the food and pharmaceutical industries, among others.

Without prejudice to the fact that intermediaries are an important part of the recovery and recycling chain, it is the generating industries themselves that play a fundamental role in obtaining the benefits of waste recovery.

Those unfamiliar with plastics recycling may not realize how varied and complicated the process can be. Since “plastic” is actually a generic term for a wide range of materials, it is important to remember that they are all different and require a particular method to convert them back into raw materials ready for reuse.

There are many other types of plastic that can be recycled, but they are more difficult to capture and clean (such as plastic wrap and films like LDPE and LLDPE) or because they can contaminate other plastics if mixed during the recycling process (such as PVC).

And while plastic represents a large portion of the waste that has recycling potential, there are many other materials that are suitable for a second life. Metals and organic materials top this list, and both have been recycled in one form or another for much longer than plastic has been around.
