Among the current environmental problems, the reduction or elimination of waste has become one of the main concerns for companies.
Nowadays, companies and administrations are making great efforts to respect the environment. Several actions can be taken to reduce waste and to adopt environmental measures to reduce the risks to the environment.
According to statistics provided by EUROSTAT, Spain produces 110.5 million tons of waste per year, of which more than 19 million tons are recycled, according to data from Informa’s DBK Sector Observatory, with an annual growth rate of more than 3%. More than 350 companies are responsible for waste recycling.
The ISO 14001 certification is an environmental management standard that recognizes that the company pays special attention to environmental care in the development of its activities.

Tesco unveils new recycling machines that reward responsible customers
Following Coca-Cola’s initiative to put recycling machines in some British amusement parks, it is now the retail giant Tesco that is testing recycling machines.
The company tested the installation of inverted vending machines, which will pay consumers who deposit plastic bottles in them, with the aim of encouraging the recycling of these containers.
Specifically, the machines will pay 10 pence (11 euro cents) for each bottle recycled. The trial will allow each user to return a maximum of ten bottles per day. The container size may not exceed 750 milliliters.
The pilot will initially be carried out in selected Tesco stores located in Borehamwood, Swansea, Edinburgh, Manchester, and Birmingham (UK).
“We are committed to eliminating single-use plastic wherever possible and simplifying recycling for customers. Today we take another step in that direction,” says Tesco’s the UK and Ireland CEO Jason Tarry.
“However, we know that retailers, manufacturers, and the Government must work together to move forward. We urge the Government to adopt a single, national approach to waste collection that facilitates recycling,” he adds.
Types of recycling garbage cans
Yellow garbage can
This is the place for plastic containers, cans, and tetra bricks, always with the smallest trace of food or other materials. For example:
– Plastic bottles and bags
– Cans
– Plastic, metal, and sheet metal caps and lids
– Aluminum trays
– Film and aluminum foil
– Aerosols
– Deodorant cans
– Yogurt pots and lids
– All tetra bricks
– White cork trays
– Toothpaste tubes
However, there are some wastes that should not be deposited in this recycling container. We are talking about plastic toys (waste containers), baby bottles, pacifiers, kitchen utensils, used plasticized paper, Tupperware, aluminum coffee capsules, thermoses, plastic flower pots, CD and DVD cases, VHS video and cassette tape cases, pens and office supplies, lighters, plastic materials from paintings or photographs and medicine containers.
The blue recycling container
This container is intended for the recycling of paper and cardboard:
– Paper or cardboard bags
– Cardboard boxes
– Cardboard boxes
– Notebooks, advertising brochures, gift wrapping paper…
– Everyday paper, newspapers, magazines, envelopes…
– Rolls or cardboard tubes from toilet and kitchen paper.
The most common mistake is to deposit tetra bricks -like milk cartons- in this container. As we have seen, these wastes should go in the yellow container. On the other hand, papers impregnated with oil or other similar substances should go in the organic container.
Green container
This is the recycling container for glass containers: water bottles, wine bottles, liquor bottles, juice bottles, and other similar types of containers. But always remember to remove the plastic, cork, or metal stoppers. We must also deposit in this recycling container the bottles -perfumes, colognes, or creams- and the jars -preserves or vegetables-.
The most common confusion is to think that crystal is glass and to deposit it in this container. Crystal and glass are two different materials with different recycling processes. Therefore, for the glass of light bulbs, mirrors, glasses, and crockery -that is to say, everything that is not glass-you must take it to a clean point for its correct recycling.
Brown garbage can, the new recycling garbage can
It is the container for the recycling of organic waste. For example:
– Remains of fruit, vegetables, vegetables, cereals, and legumes.
– Bread, pastry, and cookie scraps
– Fruit pits, peelings, nuts, and seeds
– Biodegradable waste such as used kitchen paper, used napkins, coffee grounds (only coffee grounds), tea bags, bottle corks made from cork oak cork, etc.
– Flower, dry leaves, and plants remain.
– Sawdust
– Eggshells
– Meat, fish, seafood…
On the other hand, the following products should not be deposited in this container: cooking or any other type of oil, diapers, sanitary napkins, condoms -or any other health and hygiene product-, bottle corks made of plastic or resin, human or animal excrement, stones, sand or garden soil and cleaning products used at home.
