If your wall or ceiling has a crack or cracks and pecks, you should find out if it is a structural defect of the house or if it is due to the expansion and contraction of the materials themselves. For this type of problem you should use crack tape or special caulks. Crack tape is used when cracks appear due to expansion and contraction of the materials. This adhesive tape is easy to use: it is cut to size and then just stick it over the crack. Then fill, allow to dry and sand.
How to prepare cement for filling cracks
You can’t just fix things with more cement; instead, you’ll need a specific repair mix. Pay close attention to the cement repair mix you buy. For large cracks or chipped edges, mortar mixes are a good choice. If your cracks are 1/8-inch or narrower, you’re better off with latex or epoxy mixes.
Before you can seal the crack, you will need to widen the space below the surface. This process is known as “embedding” and helps the concrete repair mix adhere better. You will do this with your chisel. Insert the chisel at an angle into the crack, then use the hammer to tap gently.
You’ve probably made a mess of “hammering” the crack, so now you need to clean it up. This is where the wire brush, broom and vacuum come into play. Remove the debris from inside the crack with the wire brush or sweep it out with the broom. Then, use the vacuum cleaner to suck it all up so it’s out of your crack.
