In 2006, Michelle Khine arrived at the University of California’s newly created Merced campus ready to set up her first lab. At the time, she was experimenting with tiny liquid-filled channels, hoping to develop chip-based diagnostic tests, a discipline known as microfluidics. The problem was that the specialized equipment he had previously been using to make microfluidic chips cost more than $100,000-an amount that was not immediately available. “I’m a very impatient person,” says Khine, who today works as an assistant professor at the University of California, Irvine. “I wanted to figure out a way to get everything up and running really quickly.”
Douglas Crawford, associate executive director of the California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences, sees a number of advantages to Khine’s method. “Michelle’s technique is better, faster, and cheaper-it can make microfluidic prototyping accessible to all labs,” he says.
