The plastics industry in mexico 2021
The continuous progress in the synthesis of new plastic materials, as well as the economy and versatility of the manufacturing processes of parts made with this material have allowed the rapid growth of the sector.
Today’s society travels packaged in this element obtained after a chemical reaction in which two or more molecules combine to form another molecule that repeats the primitive structures, giving rise to the so-called polymer.
Once the polymeric compounds, powders, granules, pastes, etc. have been created, they are treated by processes such as extrusion, injection or compression. From there, the transformation phase is followed by assembly to obtain the final product. Once this process is complete, the plastic is ready to become a key part of everyday life.
In the logistics of the most diverse sectors, from food to electronics, automotive, agriculture, construction and medicine, plastic plays a vital role. The use of bags made of this material means, for example, a 300% reduction in the total weight of packaging, making it easier to transport more products to the end consumer while using the same amount of fuel.

Based on the Anipac 2019 Statistical Yearbook, he reported that the most important part, in market segmentation, is occupied by the packaging sector, with 47%; followed by general consumption, with 21%; construction, 12%; electronic sector, with 7%, “we have a large number of companies that transform electronic products in our country”; automotive, 6%; the agricultural market, 3%; medical, 2%; and others, 2%.
He highlighted that these segments cover all the Sustainable Development Goals set by the UN and mentioned that the New Plastics Economy Global Agreement, promoted by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation in 2018, seeks to eliminate packaging that is not reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025. “In that we are aligned and work based on circularity; let’s reincorporate these products into the productive chain.”
In addition to these commitments, there is the National Agreement for the New Plastics Economy in Mexico, which seeks to promote the handling and management of waste, “…it is unsustainable to continue in a Linear Economic Model, we have to migrate to a Circular Economic Model and for that we require the interaction, co-responsibility and work of the industry, the government and society”.
What is the name of the plastics industry?
In Mexico, the plastics industry has been a key piece in the national economic development. Its contribution has helped to potentiate sectors that today are strategic for the country, depending on each region or state.
Mexico’s geographical position is privileged. Its wide border with the United States, its access to two large oceans and its connection with Central and South America have made it a key country in terms of international trade.
In this sense, and according to the study “Evolución de la Localización y la Especialización Regional en la Industria Manufacturera Mexicana: 1993 – 2013”, conducted by Banco de México, trade liberalization and the environment of increased competition faced by Mexican exports have affected the development of the various manufacturing activities and, therefore, the regional economic structure in a differentiated manner.
“This has been reflected in changes in the levels of industrial location and specialization of the states. In this way, the shocks to international trade faced by the country have a differentiated impact on the economic activity of the different regions,” he explains.

The production of plastic products, especially containers and appliances is changing drastically in the face of new market challenges, due to the fact that one of the most important challenges is the increase in the demand for sustainable products, as now, the use of disposable products made of plastic is restricted, which has driven the development of biodegradable and compostable plastics, as a result the plastics industry is working to develop new products and the necessary infrastructure to produce the products that the market demands with specifications that make them environmentally friendly. This is only one of the challenges faced by this industry in Mexico and worldwide, but with the constant innovation and openness to change that characterizes the Mexican industry, new challenges can be faced with optimal results. An area of opportunity that implies an important challenge for the Mexican plastics industry is the manufacture of processing equipment for the manufacture of plastics. Until now, most of this type of equipment is imported, but a growing group of companies is dedicating itself to satisfy this need internally, which is increasing as companies require equipment capable of adapting to change in terms of the incorporation of recycled materials in their plastic manufacturing processes.
