New research from the University of Southampton, UK, published in the Journal of Clinical Pathology, has concluded that honey curbs the activity and growth of bacterial biofilms and reduces the possibility of their adherence to any surface, including plastic.

This study, reported in an article in Science Daily, entitled “Manuka honey curbs activity, growth of bacteria even at low dilutions,” points out the various possibilities for the use of honey in patients with medical devices, such as urinary catheters that are subject to a high risk of infection.

In order to test whether honey could really help clean these tubes, the scientists placed two types of bacteria (Escherichia coli’ and ‘Proteus mirabilis) inside the tubes and diluted the honey in water using different concentrations to obtain greater or lesser strength. As a result, they found that no matter how strong the honey was or how long the tube was immersed, it did its job and reduced the presence of the bacteria in the catheter tubes.
