Who invented plastic bags?

To keep it open and stable, the garbage bag is placed in a rigid, uncovered container by adjusting the ends to its sides. In households, the bag is placed in the garbage can that is placed in the kitchen under the sink, as this is where most of the waste is generated. The garbage can also holds the waste collected from other containers such as wastepaper baskets and ashtrays.

The garbage bag has traditionally been preferably dark in color: black, gray or navy blue. However, the implementation of selective garbage collection has led to the commercialization of containers in different colors – yellow, blue, white, etc. – aimed at individualizing the types of waste. The selective collection garbage cans have several containers in which colored bags can be placed for quick identification.

The easy-closing bags have a plastic band around the top perimeter that allows them to be closed by pulling them closed in a single movement. This gesture avoids subsequent knotting as the bag is sufficiently closed. Due to their great convenience, easy-closing bags have experienced a great growth in sales despite their higher price.

Did you know that plastic bags

In general, the manufacturing process of a plastic bag includes the extrusion of the resin, either by blowing method or by means of a die; the printing can be by flexography or rotogravure method (also rotogravure); there can be a varnishing or lamination process with another layer of plastic, and finally the welding or sealing process by means of heat and pressure. It is a large industry worldwide, which allows food preservation and transportation, brand recognition, consumer protection from pirate brands or companies without references, contamination from external agents, preservation of the nutritional and organoleptic qualities of food, etc.

The Second World War accelerated research on plastics, given the need for new materials. Nylon, polyester and various types of synthetic rubber were developed. After the conflict, polycarbonates, acetates and polyamides were created.

In 1953, the German chemist Karl Ziegler developed polyethylene, and in 1954 the Italian Giullio Natta created polypropylene, the two most widely used plastics today. The first plastic bags for bread, snacks, fruit and vegetables were introduced in the United States in 1957.

What are plastic bags

By now, you’ve probably heard dozens of times that plastic bags are one of the biggest causes of pollution on the planet… However, you probably didn’t know that their inventor’s goal was to help the environment. It’s a bit of a shock, isn’t it? If you allow us, in the following lines, we will explain how such a good idea has ended up generating one of the greatest ecological disasters in history.

Originally, plastic bags were created as an alternative to paper bags, since the massive felling of trees involved was extremely harmful to the environment. The author of this invention was the Swedish engineer Sten Gustaf Thulin, who in 1959 found that his bags were considerably stronger than paper bags. This meant that, in principle, they could be used again and again.

What plastic bags are made of

As we already know, a garbage bag is a disposable bag used to dispose of waste.  These bags are placed in waste garbage cans and waste containers to avoid staining.  When the bag is full, it can be easily closed, so that the person has minimum contact with the waste.

This type of bags are made of plastic because it is a light, impermeable material (so both liquids and solids can be deposited inside) and minimizes the odor of the garbage. In addition, they can be incinerated along with their contents in specialized incineration facilities.
