Microwaves have ceased to be a mere instrument for heating food in the kitchen, to become an excellent choice even for cooking. In fact, we can easily come across a more or less interesting diversity of different recipes for preparing food in microwaves, from purely savory options to wonderfully sweet versions.
For example, as far as the environment itself is concerned, Styrofoam does not decompose easily, plus it is more difficult to recycle. On the other hand, animals may mistake them for food, and end up consuming them.
However, from a point of view directly related to health, they contain a compound known as styrene, which has raised some concern among the medical and scientific community, since in animal and human studies it has been linked to the appearance of different types of cancers.
The reality is that experts are concerned about containers and packaging with polystyrene foam designed to be heated in the microwave. And, as we mentioned in the previous section, one reason has to do with the presence of styrene, which has been linked to cancer.

The microwave has become an indispensable appliance in most homes. We generally use it for heating and defrosting, but also for cooking. Many offices even have a space for employees to take their tupperware to work and heat their food. Is it healthy? It is not the same to use a conventional oven or an electric oven, since the heat of this type of appliance slowly penetrates the food; however, in a microwave, the microwave energy reaches the inside of what we are heating/cooking, that is to say, it reaches all the molecules of the food and as it spreads throughout its interior, it heats up.

We know that there are several rumors circulating on the internet and in the media about the transfer of plastic and chemicals to food when heated in the microwave; however, what is behind it?
There is a chemical called diethylhexyl adipate (DEHA) that has received a lot of attention from the media and other institutions. It is a plasticizer, a substance added to some plastics to make them flexible. A person is exposed to this chemical when consuming food wrapped in plastics, especially fatty foods such as meat and cheese. However, the level is very low, well below levels that show non-toxic effects in studies conducted by the FDA.
There are several reports that have claimed that plastics contain dioxins, a group of contaminants labeled as “possible human carcinogens,” however, the FDA has found no evidence that plastic containers or plastic coatings contain dioxins and knows of no reason why they might contain dioxins.
