Global plastic production and consumption
Through the “Go Plastic Free” movement founded in the Philippines, which includes 42 countries on six continents, 239 cleanups were conducted on coasts, riverbanks, parks and streets, and brand audits carried out in those countries to determine which companies generated the most pollution worldwide. Coca Cola Company tops the list.
This ranking of polluting brands is the largest overview published to date and was conducted this 2018. The movement managed to gather 10,000 volunteers, who collected 187, 851 pieces of plastic pollutants, single-use, from more than a thousand brands with presence around the world.
The Coca Cola Company comprises 21 brands including Coca Cola, Coca Cola Zero, Diet Coke, Ciel, Del Valle, Powerade, Vitamin Water, Sprit, among others. Of the 42 participating countries, the soft drink company’s waste was found in 40, representing 75% of the 239 cleanups with a total of 9,216 plastics in seas, coasts, streets and parks.

The leading producer is the United States, which produces and consumes three times more plastics than its immediate followers, Japan and Germany. U.S. production is of the order of 35 MT while Japan’s is 14 MT and Germany’s is 11 MT. The production level of the three main countries is similar to that of consumption.

World’s largest producer of plastics
The first generation produces basic petrochemicals such as ethylene and propylene from naphtha, natural gas and ethane. These compounds are essential for the second generation, which includes the manufacture of thermoplastic resins (PE, PP and PVC), subsequently used by the third generation, the converters.
The company is present in Brazil, the United States, Mexico and Germany, in addition to 16 regional offices in other countries, with the objective of developing partnerships and creating integrated solutions for the Customer.
