How do you cut a fabric template?

Table for cutting fabric

An important detail is that you should not take as a reference the measurements of the ready-made clothes you already use, since each pattern is a world of its own and one changes with respect to the other. Always use the measurements taken directly on the body.

We will use inches or centimeters. The Metric System has replaced the imperial system in most countries. But some patterns are still marketed with those measurements so that users who are used to inches can also interpret the patterns.

Don’t go crazy and start “reading” the pattern and cutting. It would be like taking a disassembled car and trying to assemble it from scratch without reading the steps to follow, most likely you will end up making a mistake and you will have to start all over again. Therefore, take the paper of the instructions with the pattern in front of you to go step by step seeing where to take it. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to cut the templates or how to choose the best size, everything is included in the wonderful instruction sheet.

Types of fabric cuts

Before cutting, you need to be clear about what the different ways of cutting are called. The examples I am going to show you will be made with the pattern of the base skirt but the same method is applied with the other garments.

Each of these three ways of cutting has different properties. Some fabrics have more sheen or elasticity with straight yarn than with bias binding.  On the bias you will always have a higher elasticity even if that same fabric on the straight and cross thread is not elastic. Now that you know this, you should be able to put the pattern on top of the fabric and cut it out, but of course, I’m also going to explain this to you so that you are 100% clear.

The skirt is laid straight across, this means that the straight line (Straight Line – Center Back x1) has to be parallel to the straight line of the fabric. Remember that if it says spine x1, you must apply symmetry on that axis to have the whole piece.

You can use either pins or weights to hold the pattern on top of the fabric so that it doesn’t move. You have two options, mark it on the fabric with a chalk that will disappear with the first wash or cut it directly without marking. If you prefer the second option, I advise you to use the pins, because with weights and without marking it will not cut accurately. I personally don’t like to use pins and cut directly, I am more confident with weights and marking the fabric with chalk. But what you have to do is try and choose the method you like best.

Manual fabric cutting

How to place the fabric to cut a pattern is one of the first doubts of a beginner, which we already saw in another of my posts. But before putting scissors to a fabric, I recommend you to take into account these tips to cut fabric correctly. Because it is not only convenient to cut the fabric straight but you must also take into account other guidelines to have a good finish on the garments.

It is important before putting scissors to the fabric to visualize the model with the fabric that we are going to use. It must have the recommended drape and thickness for the garment we are going to sew. Look also in the pattern recommendations for the recommended fabric, the amount you will need or copy the patterns and make a test on the fabric.

If you are a beginner in sewing, copy the patterns and take them with you when you go to buy the fabric, they will be happy to help you there and they can also advise you on the best fabric for the model you have chosen.

You will see how it will mark a straight line as in the photo above. Pull the thread and cut the excess fabric from the edge. You will have a perfect and even edge all along the weft. This way you will have taken the straight line out of the fabric!
